What are the requirements of coupling?

2025-01-16

Couplings

A coupling is a component that connects two shafts in order to transfer power between them. Couplings are mainly classified into two categories: rigid couplings and flexible couplings.

Rigid couplings

Rigid couplings are used when the shafts are perfectly aligned and there is no need to compensate for misalignment. While rigid couplings are simple and affordable, they carry the risk of causing shaft stress, imbalance, and focusing. Sleeve or sleeve couplings, clamp or split sleeve couplings, and flange couplings are examples of rigid couplings.

Flexible couplings

Flexible couplings are used when the shafts are not perfectly aligned and there is a need to tolerate misalignment. They dampen vibrations and noise while accommodating angular, parallel, or axial misalignments. Sleeve pin couplings, universal couplings, Oldham couplings, gear couplings, bellows couplings, claw couplings, diaphragm couplings, and fluid couplings are some examples of flexible couplings.

Requirements for a good coupling

Some of the requirements for a good coupling are as follows:

It should be easy to connect or disconnect.

It should transfer the full power from one shaft to another without loss.

It should keep the shafts in perfect alignment.

It should reduce the shock loads transferred from one shaft to another.

It should not have protruding parts.
